Cutting Styles We Teach
At GM Cut Studio, students are trained in five essential cutting styles, covering both modern precision and traditional freehand methods. This gives you a complete understanding of the techniques used in real gem industries around the world.

Cabochon Cutting
• Shaping and polishing smooth, rounded stones without facets.
• Focus on achieving perfect domes, symmetry, and a high-polish surface.
• Used for stones like opal, star sapphire, turquoise, and materials where color, pattern, and light effects (like asterism) are more important than sparkle.
• Ideal for beginners and for learning stone shaping before moving to faceting.

Jambpeg
Using a simple horizontal lap and wooden dop stick (no mast, no index).
• Angles are controlled by eye and slight hand movement, inserting the stick into holes on the jambpeg board.
• An ancient, heritage method still practiced in Sri Lanka and parts of India.
• Trains fine motor control, angle sensitivity, and an understanding of traditional craftsmanship.

Handpiece Faceting Machine (with Index Gear)
Using a mast-type faceting machine with angle and height controls.
• Focuses on perfect symmetry, repeatability, and clean facet junctions.
• Common for competition cuts, high-end jewelry stones, and calibrated shapes like round brilliant and emerald cut.
• Teaches precise control over angles, meet points, and brilliance optimization.

Precision Faceting Machine (Facetron)
Using a mast-type faceting machine with digital angle and height controls.
• Focuses on perfect symmetry, repeatability, and clean facet junctions.
• Common for competition cuts, high-end jewelry stones, and calibrated shapes like round brilliant and emerald cut.
• Teaches precise control over angles, meet points, and brilliance optimization.

Freehand Cutting Style
LTrue Thai traditional method — no index, no angle guides.
• The cutter manually controls all angles by skill and visual judgment.
• This is the real method used for cutting rubies and sapphires (corundum) in Thailand — even for valuable stones.
• Teaches you how to maximize yield from rough stones, adapt to inclusions, and cut quickly and intuitively like professional Thai cutters.
